Wednesday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

In our first reading today, we hear some confusing words, “and those he predestined he also called; and those called—justified; those justified he also glorified.” What does this phrase, ‘he predestined’ mean? Are we stuck with what God has decided for us? Are we not free to act and choose as we wish? Are some saved and others not?

These are questions that have been asked for centuries and are often asked today. It’s essential to answer this question well because we value, as we should, our free will. Love isn’t love if it’s not freely given. So, what does Jesus mean then? Without Christ, we do not have the power to choose and keep to our choices for good because we can be overcome with evil thoughts. Christ’s death and resurrection predestined us for true freedom, to choose and keep to that choice.

When faced with a choice to do good or evil, know that you have been predestined to be good and choose well, allowing you the glory of heaven.
