Tuesday of the Third Week of Lent

Today's Mass Readings

The call to forgive as God has forgiven us is characteristically Christian. It never seems to get easier. One of the hardest parts of committing to Jesus’ command is to forgive others and not receive forgiveness.

The mature Christian will forgive without expecting forgiveness in return. In fact, this contrite, humble, and devout spirit will offer this as a spiritual sacrifice to God at any point. Indeed, each one of us can seek praise and, at least, respect for magnanimity. Can we in fact just be the big person and go to God for our satisfaction?

Lent challenges us to stretch in this way. We commit to forgiveness, to not count the cost, and to detach from numbing consolations. Can the good God who forgives us repeatedly be our everything?
