Tuesday of the Sixth Week in Ordinary Time
It is a common occurrence for people to become discouraged throughout their day because of temptation or misfortunes. Oftentimes, this can lead to a certain cynical attitude towards Our Lord. We must be careful not to blame him for these things, as they are not caused by Him, but rather, by our own sins and by the works of the devil. The Lord allows these things to happen to us so that we can continue to choose Him out of love. We are not alone in this battle. The Lord will give us the strength to overcome our problems and temptations, just as he reminded his Apostles in today’s Gospel, “When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?” They answered him, “Twelve.”
All we must do is ask Him. The Lord is glorified evermore through our victories over the power of the evil one, and He wants His children to succeed. We must persevere in our love of Christ and battle against temptation. St. James says in the first reading, “Blessed is he who perseveres in temptation, for when he has been proven he will receive the crown of life that he promised to those who love him.”
