Solemnity of St. Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today's Mass Readings

Working in our seminary, I see how greatly the relationships between fathers affect the lives of their sons. So important is the father’s relationship that it influences the adult practice of faith, self-discipline, self-worth, and identity. Nearly every psychological study on this issue has born out that a father who is present, caring, and religious will positively impact the lives of adult children.

We can understand why Jesus needed to be in His Father’s house, the holiest site on earth. At the same time, while Christ is fully divine, He is also fully human. Jesus needed St. Joseph. Therefore, he needed to be formed by a loving and protective father. As a righteous man, Joseph even modeled for the Lord how to pray and worship.

The prophecy given to King David was that God would make a dynasty for him that would be firm. St. Joseph was courageous, righteous, and thus firm. He was a man who was obedient to God’s will, sacrificed personal gain, and created a stable home for Jesus and Mary. God the Father could have cared for the Christ Child as He is all-powerful. Yet to fully experience the human condition, He necessitated the care of a human father.

St. Joseph is a special patron for many persons, but particularly for fathers and children. Let us follow his example and ask his intercession to grow in obedience, virtue, and courage.
