Today's Mass Readings

“You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

Jesus affirms that the poor have a special place in the heart of the Church. Consider another Gospel, Matthew 25. Here, Jesus says to those who were faithful stewards, “you gave me food when hungry, clothing when naked, a drink when thirsty” they are confused, “but when did we do that, Lord?” Jesus responds, “it was the poor whom you served which was me.”

We want Christ to be in our midst, walk with us, speak to us, and be with us. He is with us in the poor, and those who suffer—our encounter with them is an encounter with Christ.

When is the last time, if ever, you actively reached out to those in need? When was the last time you took the time to listen to those suffering? When was the last time you saw Christ in your brothers and sisters?

If you want Christ to be with you, go where he said he would be.
