Monday of the Sixth Week of Easter
Today’s Collect (opening prayer) is asking that we may “experience…the fruits,” the effects of doing all this serving and praying and trying to follow Him. That we may experience…. What does observing the paschal mysteries feel like? We are, after all, both body and spirit. Catholics are known for involving all the senses in their worship services: sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. It isn’t just a sermon!
Almost all of the seven sacraments themselves use tangible, natural materials: water, bread, wine, and oil. These are outward signs of inward realities. They are means of grace. It takes faith for them to “work,” for their fruits to have an effect on us—for us to have a sacred experience.
Let’s look at today’s Psalm: “The Lord takes delight in his people.” The Lord takes delight in us. He has feelings for us, a soft spot. He loves us. He puts a crown on our heads. No matter how much we have messed up, made mistakes, or gotten off track, the Lord waits for us and welcomes us back. He likes us!
For Today:
O Lord, may we experience the fruits of your redemption. May we have joy in believing that you take delight in us. We pray in your holy name. Amen.
