Christmas Weekday – January 3

Today's Mass Readings

Sonship in the scriptures is essential. It often signifies two things. The first is belonging to a people and family, and the second is priestly ministry. Within a theological framework, this sonship is vital for both men and women because it is in this sonship we find our fullest identity.

Regarding sonship and belonging, each of us is rightly called children of God, and it is here that the broad expression of sons and daughters finds its force. It was the firstborn son who inherited the greatest wealth; we share in Christ’s first-born status, meaning we share the wealth of the Father as both sons and daughters.

As members of the Church, we all share a common priesthood because we are called firstborn sons. This common priesthood is expressed through our ability to speak the Father as his child, offer spiritual sacrifices for ourselves and others, be present to the most sacred rites of the Mass, and be capable of real communion with God.

Rejoice that as men and women, we are called Sons of God, for we receive a great reward.
