Memorial of Sts. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus

Today's Mass Readings

Martha, Mary, and Lazarus – the saints we celebrate today – were dear friends of the Lord Jesus. He made time in his busy schedule to visit them and stay with them. And, when Lazarus died, Jesus wept. Martha and Mary knew Jesus so well that, when he came to them after Lazarus’ death, they both declared that he would not have died if Jesus had been there. They had great faith in their dear friend.

Even still, they did not yet know Jesus fully, for he surpassed their expectations and raised Lazarus to life even after four days in the tomb. They thought that they knew their close friend, but they still had more to learn about Jesus. Thankfully, what they learned only deepened their love for him, for he is the Resurrection and the Life. He is God Incarnate, Emmanuel, and he has come among us so that we, too, might know and love him and dedicate our lives to him.
