Tuesday of the Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time
We continue to follow the reluctant mission of Jonah to the people of Nineveh but today’s Scripture reading shows a major shift in his attitude. He has stopped running away and finally decided to accept God’s will. He therefore began the three-day walk through the city to warn the people to change their ways. Much to his surprise, the king and all the people were deeply moved by his call for fasting and conversion of life. Thus, in a very roundabout way, God spoke to the people through an unlikely prophet. How often do we reject the message because of the messenger?
What could provide a greater contrast than today’s Gospel? Jesus was eager and happy to visit his close friends, Martha and Mary. And likewise, each of the two sisters was just as excited to give their best gifts to honor his presence. Traditionally the two responses given by the sisters have been interpreted as examples of an active spirituality and a contemplative spirituality. If we go deeper, in the practical scheme of things the greatest motivator is love searching to do the will of God. In the case of these two sisters, we should not be surprised that heartfelt hospitality found its full and perfect balance in eager personal service accompanied by intense and respectful listening. How concerned are we to maintain that healthy balance?
