Memorial of St. Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr
When I was growing up, I watched professional wrestling. People who know me probably think that’s where I got my manners. Anyway, I loved the storylines and the action and all the work that went into the shows. One thing that pro-wrestling fans will tell you is that it is not fake. The shows are scripted and choreographed, yet the stunts and risks the athletes take are all real. Ask a pro-wrestler why he takes so many risks and he would say that he is willing to for love of the sport. He is willing to make sacrifices for what he loves.
We see this same theme ring out in Paul’s Letter to the Romans. “I am not ashamed of the Gospel.” St. Paul knew the importance of the Gospel and was willing to give his life over to spread the Gospel. He, just as Jesus, would ultimately give his life for what he preached. Paul gave over his life and dedicated to God who he knew created and made all things and thus would redeem all things in the end. Keeping this in mind it is so important to remember that God has created each of us and wants us to live up to our fullest potential. We are meant to thrive in the spiritual life as God created us to be.
Lesson: God is the Creator of all things. He made the World and makes all things come into being, even our souls. That is why we are called to examine our lives and pray and turn to the Sacraments to have ourselves purified on our spiritual journey. Do a deep and thorough examination of your life. What things hold you back from God’s love? It is love of money, career ambition, excessive internet use, anger or resentment, lust or adultery in any form? Take the initiative to clean the inside of the dish and put your life in order to be what God created you to be. Amen.
