The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed

Today's Mass Readings

Today we celebrate All Souls Day (aka Commemoration of the Faithful Departed). According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, “The theological basis for the feast is the doctrine that the souls which, on departing from the body, are not perfectly cleansed from venial sins, or have not fully atoned for past transgressions, are debarred from the Beatific vision, and that the faithful on earth can help them by prayers, alms, deeds, and especially by the sacrifice of the Holy Mass.”

My parents would occasionally add intentions for the poor, suffering souls in Purgatory to our family prayers. I did not really understand it, and I did not offer any such prayers on my own.

Being “mature” now, my prayers have become more fervent and more frequent for the poor, suffering souls. I have no doubt that I will someday be one of those souls who will rely on the prayers of others to realize the hoped-for Heavenly reward.

When you pass a cemetery, say a prayer for the faithful departed. At Mass, join me in offering an intention for the poor souls. The souls for whom you are praying are innumerable.
