Thursday of the Third Week of Advent

Today's Mass Readings

An authentic encounter with the Lord brings joy. Mary does for Elizabeth what she does for every Christian who seeks her intercession. Mary puts us in proximity to Jesus. Mary does it physically as she carries Jesus in her womb and His presence is acknowledged by John the Baptist leaping in his mother’s womb. Mary brings Christ, and she brings us to Christ.

We are invited into this same joy. Pope Francis reminded us, “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness, and loneliness. With Christ joy is constantly born anew” (Evangelii Gaudium, 1). It is worth remembering that this “joy” will take on different forms. It might lead us to physically leaping, but more often than not it will simply be an abiding inner peace of heart. It is a joy of being in harmony with God and neighbor, the fruit of saying “yes” to God and following Him, doing His will, an acceptance of God’s plan, even though it may be confusing at the outset.

The Prophet Zephaniah said: “Fear not, O Zion, be not discouraged! The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior.” In all circumstances of our life, especially in the difficulties, we can trust God’s presence and action. In Mary’s womb, Jesus was hidden, yet He was still present and those who were attentive were able to detect it. When you don’t see Jesus clearly at work, trust that He is anyway, and wait in patience. The Mighty Savior will make Himself known.
