Solemnity of Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary
A number of years ago, a Printery House customer wrote to inquire why one of our St. Joseph Day cards contained a scripture quote from Genesis 41:55 “Go to Joseph…” The writer asked: “What does a quotation from the book of Genesis have to do with St. Joseph?” The answer to that question provides a rich reflection on the role of St. Joseph as the foster father of Jesus. It is this very allusion to the patriarch Joseph of Egypt which inspired the entrance antiphon used for today’s liturgy: “Behold, a faithful and prudent steward, whom the Lord set over his household” (Lk 12:42). It is an echo of Psalm 105:21 which recounts the story of Joseph, sold into slavery in Egypt: “He made him lord over his household, ruler over all his possessions.”
Just as Pharaoh made the first Joseph ruler and lord over all his possessions in Egypt, so did God make St. Joseph head of the Holy Family and placed him in charge—not just of a king’s possessions—but of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Just as the Patriarch Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams, so St. Joseph heeded the message received in a dream “do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.” Just as Joseph of Egypt was responsible for supplying grain to those suffering from famine, so did St. Joseph of Nazareth supply sustenance for Jesus, the Bread of Life who feeds us with his own Body and Blood. Just as Pharaoh said “Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you,” so we are bidden today, to turn to St. Joseph in time of need and to heed his example of complete trust in following God’s will.
Prayer for Today: God our loving Father, help us to place our complete trust in your will in all things as did Joseph, the foster Father of your son Jesus.
