Today's Mass Readings

The first reading from 2 Chronicles 24:17-25 recounts the disastrous reign of King Joash after the death of his mentor and protector, Jehoiada. His return to the worship of pagan idols and his murder of Zechariah, son of Jehoiada the priest brought ruin upon Judah and Jerusalem. The responsorial psalm, however, reminds us of God’s utter fidelity to His covenant and love for His chosen people in spite of evil kings and human sinfulness: “Forever I will maintain my love for my servant…I will establish your throne for all generations” (Ps 89:29,5). This promised line of David’s descendants will culminate in Jesus Christ, the Beloved Son of the Father, the King whose throne is “for all generations.”

The gospel from Matthew chapter 6 is the famous passage about the lilies of the field. It is a much-needed reminder to us of God’s faithfulness to those who are devoted to Him. Joash served the Lord in his youth but later followed the advice of worldly princes and began to serve other gods. We cannot serve two masters. The Lord promises that those who give their lives completely to Him and seek His Kingdom above all else will lack for nothing: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear…Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these will be given you besides.” (Mt 6:25,31-33). If our trust is anchored securely on God and not on the passing fads and fancies of the created world, all that we really need will be provided. “Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself.” God has promised and He will remain faithful to his covenant with us.
