Thursday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time
“Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be” (Matthew 6: 21).
Living out the message of today’s Mass readings is impossible unless we know what and where our treasure is. And, therefore, where our heart is.
Changing things that are external can be helpful to identifying our values. Such as getting adequate sleep, following a schedule of prayer and devotions, disciplining ourselves to exercise, improving our diet, or limiting our use of technology. If our own well-being is our treasure, then we do not need to go any further.
In St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, however, we are encouraged multiple times to “put on the armor of God” so that we may be always vigilant and ready to resist evil desires. This will only be possible if we treasure the gospel of truth, righteousness, and peace, all of which make us one body, with Christ Jesus as the capstone.
If our treasure is the good of “all the holy ones”, then our heart will be ever watchful against other (lesser) attractions.
