Memorial of St. Lucy, Virgin and Martyr
I’m okay admitting that sometimes I need another person to help me see and understand something. Yes, it can be the case that I don’t understand something, and another person’s perspective helps to communicate what I need to know. I think that’s what Jesus is going in our gospel today. He’s calling out the people, the generation, that he encounters. Jesus is basically telling them this: when a flute is played, dance! When you hear a durge, be sad! When you see a man fasting, he’s doing it as a sacrifice to God, and that’s holy and sanctifying. When you see one drinking and eating with others, he enjoying fellowship with his brothers and sisters. Jesus got the generation that had been reading everything wrong. It took Jesus to call them out so they could see their wrong assumptions and labels. The question placed before us today, are we like that generation Jesus encounters? Do we make automatic assumptions? Do we put labels on people? St. Lucy, pray for us.
