Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and evangelist
Don’t blink, or else you will miss today’s Gospel.
All Jesus said was, “Follow me,” and that changed Matthew’s life forever. It also changed the Church.
Funny how simple the beginning of a vocation can be. For my parents, it was a glance at a dance (they arrived with different partners). For me, I offhandedly said to my parish priest that I was not called to the diocesan priesthood; he replied, “I know you’re not” and started a conversation about monastic life.
There’s no magic here. A vocation is made up of inspiration, reflection, prayer, questions, any number of virtues (i.e., humility, love, faith, hope, etc.), more prayer, dying to oneself from time-to-time, and more prayer. With discernment, spiritual guidance, and perseverance, it will be sustained and nourished by the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
