Feast of St. Stephen, first martyr

Today's Mass Readings

St. Stephen did not die in vain. He witnessed the power and love of Jesus Christ even to the very end, and the Holy Spirit was powerfully at work in him. Those who were stoning Stephen “laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul.” The man who would later become the great Apostle to the Gentiles, St. Paul, looked on with approval as Stephen was martyred. What impact did Stephen’s example of confidently proclaiming Christ, even in the face of death, have on Saul?

Our example and faithfulness to God impacts other people. Most of the time we do not realize the hidden impact we might have on another person. But, the conversion of many hearts came about because they saw the joy and conviction of early Christians. They were steadfast in their belief even in the face of death.

Many of us are not facing death on account of our faith, but more likely we encounter a thousand different frustrations and annoyances. Our witness might be to avoid grumbling and complaining, and simply accept our crosses with a serene and peaceful heart. In every circumstance, let’s have eyes of faith like St. Stephen who was able to ‘look up intently to heaven and see the glory of God.’
