Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

“Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.” – Matthew 1:16

In the beginning of the Gospel according to Matthew, we find a long genealogy of Jesus. Many of the names listed are familiar to us, such as Abraham and David from the Old Testament. The life of the Blessed Virgin Mary also calls back many events from the Old Testament as well. Her Magnificat in Luke’s Gospel is reminiscent of the song of Hannah. In Matthew’s Gospel, Mary flees to Egypt, and eventually travels back to her homeland, mirroring the journey of Israel. These events symbolize Mary as Israel, from whom will come the Messiah.
