Fifth Sunday of Easter

Today's Mass Readings

The beginning of today’s gospel, Jesus says, “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.” It reminds me of a dream my grandmother had a few years after my grandfather passed away. She told me it was incredible! She said, “It felt so real, I was with Papa [my grandfather] on a mountain, and he was saying, ‘Look, Bern, at how beautiful everything is! All these mansions on these mountains!’” My grandmother, I believe, got a little foretaste of heaven because, as St. Paul writes in the first letter to the Corinthians, “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him.” Three months after my grandmother passed away, I was on top of one of the mountains at our Mother House in Engelberg, Switzerland, though it was a cloudy day, I couldn’t help but think of my dear Mimi enjoying her new life with my grandfather and all of the little babies that she had miscarried. She knew that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and if we follow him, he will show us the Father because Jesus and the Father are one.
