Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The prophet Zechariah depicts the triumphant entrance of a King into the Promised Land of Israel, specifically into the Holy City of Jerusalem. It seems odd that such a powerful person is entering Jerusalem on a donkey (who would do such a thing??). Even more odd is the description of the King as humble, as compared with, say, a conquering warrior.
Immediately before this, Zechariah writes that the Land had to be prepared for his entrance. Lessor kings and idols had to be removed. Pride had to be destroyed. And all this was to make the Land ready and receptive for the people who the King would call to build his House.
The King is making a journey. His Spirit is calling out to the Spirit which dwells in his people, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened. Learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart.” His Spirit is asking us to make a journey, too.
His Spirit is calling out to me. His Spirit is calling out to others. But what preparations will His Spirit require of my Spirit?
