Today's Mass Readings

The prophet Jeremiah gives voice to a familiar human pain: being falsely accused. He says, “I hear the whisperings of many: ‘Terror on every side! Denounce him! Let us denounce him!’” His enemies hope to trap him and bring him down. Yet amidst this suffering, Jeremiah makes a remarkable confession of faith: “But the Lord is with me, like a mighty champion.” Even when others distort the truth, he entrusts himself to God, who sees the heart and defends the just.

The Gospel shows the same pattern. Jesus faces accusations and the threat of stoning, yet he does not respond with fear or anger. Instead, he points to the works he has done in the Father’s name, letting his life bear witness to the truth.

These readings remind us that unjust accusations are not new. Our instinct is often to defend ourselves, but Jeremiah shows another path: trust in the Lord. God sees what others cannot. He restores what human judgment damages. When we act with integrity and faith, it is God—not others—who defines us and brings life.
