Friday of the First Week of Lent

Today's Mass Readings

“Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” (Today’s Gospel from Matthew)

In today’s gospel, Jesus tells us to reconcile with one another before offering gifts at the altar. Unforgiveness blocks the flow of faith, hope, and especially love in our lives. It can drag us down and halt our progress in the spiritual life. That is why Jesus makes a point of reconciling before offering our gifts at the altar, and not after. Reconciliation is often easier when we seek it right away and becomes more difficult the longer we wait. It is better to mend our relationships quickly so that nothing stands in the way of our life with God.
