Friday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

Our reading at Mass from the Gospel of St. Luke provides another story that is similar to the Gospel read last Monday. Jesus once again heals someone (this time a man) on the Sabbath in the presence of Pharisees. These deliberate “violations” of the Law in the presence of teachers of the Law took courage and definitely drew attention.

Jesus has now cured both a woman and a man on the Sabbath. By so doing, he recalls that man and woman were made in the image and likeness of God; that image should be respected and honored. Furthermore, Jesus wishes to save the entire person—soul and body—from Satan’s control. Why should such an act be prohibited on any day?

The Sabbath is not to be taken lightly. The Sabbath has been given to us so that we can rest from our labors and honor Him. But the opportunity to improve the condition of another (motivated by love of that person) also honors Him.
