Friday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time
The Gospel passage today ends with a very interesting thought from Jesus, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” In the prologue of the gospel of John, John writes, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” A few verses later, John writes, “and the Word became Flesh and dwelt among us.” So, this Word of God that John is writing about is Jesus himself, the Word of God Incarnate. Thus, when we turn to Chapter 1 in Genesis and see God creating the world, God speaks, “Let there be light.” And the light is created. So, this powerful word that God speaks to create becomes present to us as God the Son Incarnate; as Jesus Christ.
Jesus himself is the Word of God given to us. When he speaks to us, his words have life and give life to us. We should read his words each day, listen to him, and like his mother Mary, ponder his words in our hearts. His words have the power to guide us, to heal us, and to set us free.
