Friday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time
How does anyone decide if something has value? If one has any interest at all in a topic, he may read up on it or listen to someone talk about it. His level of interest will determine how far he wants to dive in.
In the early 50s AD, St. Paul visited Ephesus. The city had an established Jewish community, so they were interested when he preached Jesus as the fulfillment of the Messianic promise. St. Paul left for about a year but then returned for a longer stay.
The Letter to the Ephesians was written in the early 60s. By then the community was a combination of persons from both Jewish and Gentile heritages. No doubt they had heard of St. Paul’s missionary travels, his trials, and his present imprisonment. Yet despite these hardships, the tone of his Letter is that of one who is at peace. “Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace . . .”
Listening to this letter written by this man, I want to know more about this Jesus who is St. Paul’s rock.
