Friday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

Our Gospel today talks about the contrast between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. It has to do with the plans of God’s heart. Jesus is the supreme prophet, sent by God to reveal to us the marvelous newness of His Father’s love. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is but another expression of this truth: God loves us. The universe is driven by Divine Love!

The Old Covenant enshrined the beginnings of this revelation—“with an age‑old love I have loved you,” God says in Jeremiah.

But Jesus comes to show us how abundant and lavish this love of God is. What we need to be on guard against is the ‘It’s too good to be true!’ attitude. No, God’s love is always surprising us because it is not of the oldness of sin but of the newness of Divine Life.

The new wine of the Kingdom and the new cloth out of which we members of Christ are made, is a new affirmation: God brings good out of evil; Satan never will have the last word.

The last word is God’s mercy and love. Let us be grateful for this eternally renewed giving of our God! And let us not be timid in applying it in our lives.
