Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion

Today's Mass Readings

Today we commemorate the gift of Christ dying on the cross on our behalf. Here Christ offers himself as a sacrifice for the world’s sins, healing the rift between humanity and God. In this gift, we can reenter the gift of God’s presence and enter into heaven, the New Eden, once again.

We must realize, as well, however, that we too are called to follow Christ in the same way. Jesus tells us, “unless you take up your cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.” We are called to go to Calvary with Jesus, die with Him, and rise with Him.

We follow Christ by offering ourselves in the daily things that call us to God: forgiving the wrongs of others and offering charity to those in need, no matter the situation. We are also called to offer our wills to God, seeking his desire for us rather than our own: giving up sin—gossip, lying, sexual immorality, hatred, judgment. These actions are how we follow Christ to Calvary to die.

Let us pray for the strength to endure the trial and so earn the reward.
