Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows

Today's Mass Readings

Sorrow. We don’t like to focus on the negative. I find myself turning to what is “light and bright.” On the other hand, some people never see the bright side. They only see things as “dark and stark.” Mary understood the importance of following Jesus in faith. She, in her model discipleship, looked for the light of faith in all things. She heard Gabriel’s message and accepted the task of being the Handmaid of the Lord, to bear God in birth. She raised Jesus with Joseph. She followed Jesus throughout His whole life, even unto the Cross. She never left Him in trial. She helped Jesus to bear the weight of His burdens, and she persevered through trials.

George Wiegel writes that Mary is the true model of Christian discipleship. She followed Jesus and believed in Him through all things. As we commemorate the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, may we follow Mary in persevering through trials and sorrows; for we know God will convert them into Easter Joy.
