Memorial of Saint Athanasius, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Today's Mass Readings

No excuses! Jesus performs one of his great signs in our gospel today by feeding the crowds of people who had been following him. Jesus turned a couple of loaves of bread and fish into enough bread and fish for thousands of people. It’s a great lesson for us to see the abundance of grace that He wishes to pour out to us, so that we are never thirsty or hungry in our faith.

I want to focus on what the disciples are trying to do to Jesus before he performs this miracle. They are coming up with excuses. “We are not going to find enough food for all these people.” “Two hundred days’ wages of food won’t be enough!” Thankfully Jesus wasn’t in the mood for excuses. What kind of excuses do we make in our faith journey? Do we put up red flags too fast? Do we think or feel right away with something, this won’t work? Do we say or think, this is impossible? Brothers and sisters, I think God is going to act the same way Jesus acted with his disciples, no excuses! Let’s not be quick to say it won’t work, let’s give it a try. St. Athanasius, pray for us.
