Memorial of St. Boniface, Bishop and Martyr
“To you, O Lord, I lift up my eyes.” Ps. 123. 1
As you read this week about the call to holiness and our own response to God’s loving initiative, it comes time to explore the role of all people in the Church with evangelizing. The word “evangelization” means the spreading or proclaiming of good news. What is this other than the everlasting glad tidings of Christ coming to humanity and calling all people to salvation? That is what we proclaim. St. Boniface was a monk who gave his whole life to do missionary work and evangelization in the land that is now modern-day Germany. He was a monk, priest, missionary, and finally a martyr. His example, and the example of all missionaries, can be our own.
Matthew Kelly wrote in the book The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic that most of the Catholics he polled rated evangelizing at their weakest trait. Again, this is a most unfortunate consequence of our times. To evangelize is a fundamental part of our faith. What you have received, share with others. Freely you have received and freely you are to give. I encourage you to share your faith in love. Let people know what you believe. Share a moment of your time to talk about God. Let your light shine before others so that anyone can be invited to God’s light. Amen.
