Memorial of Saint Catherine of Siena, Virgin and Doctor of the Church

Today's Mass Readings

What is the easiest, shortest route to take? Isn’t that the question we ask ourselves when we go on a journey? It is for me. And when I’m giving driving directions to someone, it’s exactly what I consider. In our gospel, I think this is what Nicodemus is trying to look for. He’s basically asking Jesus, “give me the easiest and clearest way I can communicate your teaching to my community.” Unfortunately, Nicodemus doesn’t get the answer he wanted. And instead is told that there is something greater working in the faithful that directs them, guides them, and teaches them…it is the Holy Spirit.

In our faith journey we are trying to piece everything together so that it makes sense for us. When we get stuck, we need to know that the Holy Spirit, working within us, is preparing that revelation to give to us, in the Holy Spirit’s time. Let us surrender to this Spirit that dwells within each of us. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us.
