St. Paul was imprisoned in Rome and was nearing the end of his apostolic ministry. He had founded a Church in Ephesus and appointed his trusted helper, Timothy, to lead that community. However, Timothy was facing much persecution. It was important for the Ephesians that Timothy remain steadfast in the face of hardships and St. Paul’s imminent death.
The Ephesians needed to know that God sent Christ Jesus to call them to a holy life. Jesus did this through his acts while alive, but even more through his resurrection after death, which was proof that this life is not the end.
God, the great I AM, is not God of the dead but of the living. Therefore, one must bear hardships for the Gospel because such hardships are only momentary light afflictions compared with glory that is to come.
