Are you willing to become a lighthouse? Today we commemorate St. Peter Claver who became a lighthouse in his own way in his own time. Born in Spain, he became a Jesuit and was ordained a priest in 1615 in the center of the slave trade flourishing in the Columbian city of Cartagena.

He brought light and basic dignity into the lives of thousands of slaves as they were herded like animals off the slave ships of the time. We can ask the question: What is the ultimate benefit of plunging into the disease and filth ridden holds of the slave ships or the crowded holding pens filled with those waiting further shipment and auction? Is this but one documented case among so many of systemic greed and unspeakable cruelty clashing head on with an opposite force which we call Christian charity and Good News? This massive evil contrast was spotlighted by the passion of a few missionary disciples.

History is best honored when its lessons can be applied for the good of the present. Peter Claver is but one candle burning with the power of the Holy Spirit to penetrate the darkness of evil. We must find the personal courage to name and push back the darkness that enslaves our own world, both the rich and the poor. Yes, the forces of evil surround us, but we pray for the courage and practical wisdom to lift the light of Christ high and organize the march to follow the victorious sign of the Cross and Resurrection… no matter what the cost.
