Today's Mass Readings

This week at Mass, all the first readings are from St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians. All the Gospel readings are from St. Luke.

St. Paul will frequently use a compare-and-contrast style (for example, “You were once …, but now you are . . .). Jesus will frequently challenge the prevailing notion that what appears to be success or failure in this life does not mean that God has blessed or condemned a person, respectively.

How one relates to another is important for St. Paul. His focus is on the building up of Christian communities, also referred to as Churches or as the Body of Christ. It is through the Church that God’s universal plan of salvation is realized. It is the Body of Christ which unites all people into one family and kingdom under Christ as its Head.
