Memorial of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Religious
In today’s reading, taken from chapter 9 of 2 Corinthians, St. Paul discusses why Christians should be generous, especially to the poor. He has in mind the poor in Jerusalem, but the lesson is very universal.
Generosity to others and almsgiving were a part of the Jewish religion. St. Paul accepted this and alludes to the scriptural basis: “Whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.”
The passage includes the well-known expression: “God loves a cheerful giver.” We should not give grudgingly. Cheerful giving should characterize our lives. God has freely given us grace and many other gifts. God provides seed for the sower. Remember the prayers said in Mass for the preparation of the gifts: “Through your goodness, we have received the bread (the wine) we offer you.”
The passage concludes with a reference to the Eucharist: you are being enriched in every way for all generosity, which produces thanksgiving (Eucharist) to God.
