Today's Mass Readings

Some of my family members thought I was crazy for joining a monastery, and that I would be wasting my life away. But from my point of view, I can see the exact opposite. In our first reading today, we hear, “For many, as I have often told you and now tell you even in tears, conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction. Their God is their stomach; their glory is in their “shame.” Their minds are occupied with earthly things.”

On my first profession document—and today’s first reading—I wrote, “nostra conversatio in coelis est,” which is, “our citizenship (or conversation) is in heaven.” We have Christ on our side. St. Charles Borromeo, whose feast day we celebrate today, once said “If we wish to make any progress in the service of God we must begin every day of our life with new eagerness. We must keep ourselves in the presence of God as much as possible and have no other view or end in all our actions but the divine honor.”

Let us remember where our true homeland is, in heaven!
