Memorial of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, Virgin
We continue readings from the Book of Wisdom. The book begins: “Love justice you who judge the earth; seek him in integrity of heart.” Jesus tells his disciples to guard against leading anyone into sin. He also repeats words found elsewhere in the gospel about forgiveness: if someone wrongs you and seeks forgiveness, then forgive.
So often the words of Scripture we hear on weekdays reveal a definite wisdom almost so simple to grasp the things we hear and the directions they give us. Seek the Lord; love justice, take care not to lead anyone into sin, forgive, serve one another, put the care of neighbor ahead of one’s own needs when necessary. …these and so many other admonitions.
In addition, today’s Psalm provides yet another meditation on the wisdom that comes from above. We marvel at God’s providential care for us all. The psalmist reminds us that God always has the care for his chosen ones in mind. In fac, we cannot escape God’s wisdom and love. The final verses of Psalm 139 form the perfect prayer for wisdom, for God’s guiding hand: “Search me, O God, and know my thoughts, test me, and find in me no wrong, lead me along the right paths…” And this leads to the perfect refrain: “Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way.”
