Memorial of St. Francis de Sales, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Today's Mass Readings

The thought of Jesus calling a diverse group of a dozen men together to follow him, learn from him, and then take his challenging teaching to the ends of the known world raises a huge question. How could such a small, motley crew be expected to do so much? Surely this had to be Mission Impossible!

Our thoughts not only raise human questions of logistics and obstacles but even more so we wonder about the spiritual components of the mission. Some might say it called for a great leap of faith. Yes, but God does not force anyone to change their mind and attitude about the nature of truth and where it is leading them. However, for the sake of the mission, we believe that the power of God can reach anyone anywhere and help them to realize that they are being invited, yes, chosen, empowered, to become instruments in the work of the Holy Spirit.

The amazing thing is that the multiplying factor of invitation/acceptance/response continues through the centuries. We find it in the life of St. Francis de Sales whom we honor today. However, what we see in the recognized saints is only the tip of the iceberg. The Holy Spirit continues to touch the anonymous Christians, perhaps those as close as our elbow. These are the chosen who continue to listen, ponder, and respond to the Good News in their own best way. Have we noticed? Are we one of them?
