Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi

Today's Mass Readings

We celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi today with all the Franciscans (women and men) of the world and there are many. In fact, as the old joke has it: “How many Franciscans are there?… Only God knows, and God is not sure!” We do know, that Francis of Assisi continues to have a giant influence in the spiritual life of the Church even though he was called “Il poverello”—“the little poor man.”

He took on the apparent weakness of poverty to project a strength of character that became manifest through his preaching, teaching, and simple lifestyle. He lived in a world whose culture and scientific knowledge was so different from our own, and yet its spiritual search for lasting values beyond the physical resonates with our own times.

The “little poor man” had the power and charism to call people’s attention to what was essential to acknowledging God’s presence and purpose in daily life. All of creation had an important part to play in guiding the cosmic spiritual pilgrimage to ultimate union with the Redeemer on the Holy Cross.

Is it possible that the Gospel choice for today, with Jesus scolding the people for being blind to the marvels of God working in their midst, is a nod of appreciation for the Franciscan charism and contribution? The comprehensive and challenging sign of Christ on the Cross could very well be the perfect expression of the call to “Live simply, that others may simply live!”
