Memorial of St. Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest
Today we begin readings from the book of Proverbs.
Throughout the first chapters, we hear verses like: “Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and reject not your mother’s teaching.” Prov 4:1, “Hear, O children, a father’s instruction, be attentive, that you may gain understanding.” These verses are all reminiscent of the opening lines of the Rule of St. Benedict. “Listen carefully, my son, to the master’s instruction and attend to them with the ear of your heart.”
Further on, “forget not my teaching, keep in mind my commands; for many days, and years of life and peace will they bring you; be attentive that you may understand.”
The readings from Proverbs and the Gospel selection from Luke have a similar sound. Both give us a series of short sayings and little bits of advice, worthy of our careful attention, lest we lose the truth that they hold.
The kind of wisdom and peace and maturity described above—these are the goals of all our striving. The passage from Proverbs today would have us be sincere—do good to others without delay; be straightforward and honest; avoid quarrels, jealousy, gossip, and envy; avoid arrogance; seek to be humble.
Jesus reminds us to let our lamps be burning bright. Shed light on one another, not darkness. Do those things which build up, not those which tear down.
Above all, keep moving forward in the search for that light and wisdom. We cannot stand still. There is no standing still in life. Sometimes everything seems so challenging. But is it? Try to take the time to be quiet and listen to the Lord speak to us. Draw strength from the one who is with us always.
