Faith Working Through Love
“For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.” (Galatians 5, First Reading)
How can I be sure I am following Jesus and living the Gospel? I am baptized, yes, and I have received the other Sacraments of Christian Initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist). And I have the certificates to prove it. But am I really living out the Gospel of love, service, and witness to Christ?
Following Jesus and living the Gospel is a lifelong journey. As a Benedictine monk, I have taken a vow of continual conversion to the monastic way of life. As a baptized Christian, you have expressed publicly a promise of continual conversion to the Christian way of life.
To check yourself every now and then, to pause for reflection—whether for fifteen minutes at home or a weekend retreat away—is a good and healthy spiritual practice. A certificate showing that you were baptized, confirmed, and received your first communion is just that: a piece of paper. It is the spirit that gives life. (cf. John 6:63) Let us call upon that Holy Spirit of God.
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love.
