Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today's Mass Readings

“I will sing of your salvation.” Ps. 71. 15.

Mary, O sweet and beautiful mother! Mary is known by many titles. The mother of God, Help of Christians, Refuge for Sinners, and so on. Today we honor her in devotion to her Immaculate Heart. She was conceived without any sin, and her heart itself was pure and without defilement. She did not sin against God or neighbor. Her heart was pure and “white as wool.” In spite of all of this she did suffer. She suffered greatly and sadly. She witnessed all of her Son’s journey, and although she did not endure the crucifixion physically, she did experience it to the depths of her heart. Theologically, Mary is the “first Christian,” the one who first said yes to Christ and bore Him to the World. She is our first and greatest model for discipleship. When we look to her example and ask for her intercession, you realize how bountiful it is to know her. She could survive the most horrendous experience and still hand over her heart, pure and precious, and give it to God and the Church as the greatest example of a Christian in love with God.
O Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us! Amen
