Monday of the First Week of Lent
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Today’s reading from Leviticus)
Long before Christ, we were told “you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” In the New Testament, Jesus teaches that the entire moral law rests on two commandments: to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Both of these commandments imply the other. To truly love God, we must love our neighbor, and to truly love ourselves and our neighbor, we must love God. We cannot love God if we do not love the image of God in our neighbor. Love is the fulfillment of the law. It is for this reason that Jesus teaches us that these are the two greatest commandments.
