Monday of the Fourth Week of Lent
“Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” Jesus says this to the people of Cana in Galilee who witnessed the miracle at the Wedding feast where Jesus changed water into wine. It feels like Jesus is asking, “How many signs do you need before you believe in me?” But Jesus doesn’t walk away. He desires us to believe and therefore gives us the signs we need to grow in our faith. When the royal officer pleads with for Jesus to heal is son he says, “You may go; your son will live.” With these words the official believed.
We too come before Jesus to plead with him for our lives or the lives of our loved ones, and yes, Jesus may say, “How many more signs do you need?” but his desire for our salvation is great, and he will heal us. He will give us the words we need to believe. Daily Jesus fills us with the many graces we need in order to believe but at times we grow blind to them, like the people of Cana who saw his first miracle. We may ask ourselves, “How many more signs do I need before I can believe in God’s Love for me?” We must have faith that Jesus’ desire for our souls, his compassion for our weaknesses and his love for us in our journey to him, with be made know to us to that we can say with the Psalmist, “I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.”
