Monday of the Third Week of Advent

Today's Mass Readings

Today’s readings draw us into the mystery of God’s presence—a presence that brings joy, not through human effort, but as a gift of grace to those who are open to receiving it.

In Numbers, though summoned to curse Israel, Balaam is instead moved by the Spirit of God to proclaim blessing. His vision reveals the people of Israel as a sign of God’s favor and foretells the emergence of a king, symbolized by a rising star. This prophecy prefigures Christ, the true King, whose presence transforms the chaos of human history into the fulfillment of divine promise. Balaam’s experience reminds us that God’s presence is unyielding, breaking into even the most unexpected moments to manifest His purposes.

In the Gospel of Matthew, we encounter the tension between human resistance and divine authority. The chief priests and elders, questioning Jesus, reveal hearts closed to the truth standing before them. Jesus, with divine wisdom, does not directly answer their challenge but instead points them to the necessity of discerning the source of true authority. In doing so, He invites them—and us—to move beyond skepticism and control toward faith and receptivity.

The joy of God’s presence is not merely a fleeting emotion but a profound awareness that God is Emmanuel, “God with us.” It is the recognition that God’s purposes prevail even when human plans falter or opposition arises. Yet, to experience this joy, our hearts must be attuned to His movement, willing to see His hand at work and His promises unfolding.

As Advent deepens, let us prepare our hearts to welcome this abiding presence. Take a moment each day this week to reflect on where you see God’s presence in your life. It may be in a small blessing, a challenging circumstance that stretches your faith, or in the quiet moments of prayer. By cultivating gratitude and attentiveness, we open our hearts to the joy of Emmanuel, God with us. May we perceive the blessings of God’s nearness and, unlike the religious leaders of Jesus’ day, surrender our resistance so that we might fully receive the joy of Christ, the Morning Star who rises in our hearts.
