Monday of the Third Week of Easter
When Jesus fed the 5,000, many of the people not only saw the miracle Jesus performed, but more importantly they experienced it, and understood what it was like to be filled. This experience put within them a strong desire to seek Jesus, so much so that they were willing to travel all around and across the Sea of Galilee to find Him. Tiberias to Capernaum would have been more than 6 miles rowing a boat, or 10 miles on foot. The people showed their desire to find Jesus, but when they finally locate Him, it seems they do not really know what they are looking for. What is this longing that they are experiencing? Is it a physical or a spiritual hunger?
Jesus said to them, “You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.” Jesus helps the crowd understand that what they truly seek is the food that does not perish, but endures for eternal life. Amid the passing things of this world, I think we can all relate to this deeper desire for the eternal—for what is good, true, and beautiful. Even by reading this reflection, it’s clear that you came here because you seek union with God. You came not primarily to gain deeper knowledge of the Scriptures, but because on some level you understand that the longing, persistent, and sometimes nagging desire in your heart can only be filled with God. Don’t forget the reason you are following Jesus and how Jesus is the One who can satisfy the deep hunger you experience. Open your heart to Jesus, and be filled in abundance.
