The Justice of God

The story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is sobering, not merely because of its severity, but because of what it reveals about God’s justice. In today’s first reading from Genesis 18, we hear Abraham appealing to justice: “Will you really sweep away the righteous with the wicked?” (Gen 18:23, NABRE) In other words, is that fair?

Biblical justice encompasses righteousness and fairness. A just person is one who not only follows the law but seeks to do what is right in every circumstance. It’s a disposition of the heart. The LORD patiently listens to Abraham talk him down and agrees that even if there are only 10 righteous persons in the whole city, he will spare it. God’s justice is never arbitrary or cruel. He searches hearts and honors righteousness wherever it is found.

For the Journey:

Consider how often we call upon God’s mercy; what about God’s justice? Do I let God be the judge and give my neighbor the benefit of the doubt?
