Today's Mass Readings

“The gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.” (Romans 11:29)

God does not take back what He has given. St. Paul reminds us that God’s fidelity is not like our human moods or passing affections. Once God has called, He does not un-call; once He has gifted, He does not reclaim. Even when our hearts wander or our faith grows dim, the call remains.

Although, in context, St. Paul was speaking of Israel’s enduring election by God through the patriarchs, this truth of God’s irrevocable gifts and call also speaks to every disciple who sometimes doubts his or her own worth or perseverance. We may change, but God does not. His mercy holds steady, waiting patiently for our return.

In the Gospel today, Jesus urges His followers to invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind—those who cannot repay. Here, too, we glimpse God’s own way of giving: generous, steadfast, expecting nothing in return. His gifts are irrevocable because they spring from love, not transaction.

For the Journey:
Take courage in the permanence of God’s generosity. Whatever grace He has planted in you—your vocation, your compassion, your faith—He has not withdrawn it. The seed may lie hidden for a time, but it is still alive. Let gratitude water it, and trust that the Giver is faithful still.
