Freedom in Christ

“For freedom Christ set us free.” (Galatians 4, First Reading)

Our American minds think of red, white, and blue, and patriotic songs when we hear the word “freedom.” This is fine and understandable, especially as a major civic election draws near. But this is a spiritual reflection, not a political one.

Spiritually, freedom refers to an interior state of autonomy. It means not being enslaved to the many spiritual evils that are out there—and in here, within ourselves.

If you think about it, freedom in Christ is quite radical. It means a surrender to his love, which he displayed on the cross, and an embrace of his will, which is to love as he loved.

“For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 4, First Reading)

Lord Jesus, set me free in your love and will for my life.
